Partridge

Original title: Perdiz

The partridges of the archipelago: the red-legged partridge of Madeira, rare by 1921, and the Barbary partridge introduced to Porto Santo in 1900.

The Madeira partridge is Caccabis rufa, of the family Phasianidae; that of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) is Caccabis petrosa, of the same family. The former lives on the coastal slopes and in the interior, where nests with 17, 19 and 21 eggs are found; the latter is a species introduced in 1900, but it multiplied rapidly on Porto Santo. The Madeiran partridge can today be considered a rare species (1921).
