Map: Madeira (2)

The chapel of this dedication was built in 1657 on land then belonging to the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’). Its founders were Duarte Mendes de Miranda and his wife Dona Beatriz de Vasconcelos, who endowed it by public deed of 20 September of the same year. The earthquake of 1748 left the chapel badly damaged, and it was soon rebuilt by António José Espínola, grandson of the founders, who moved it to a more suitable site near the original building.
