António José Espínola was a Genoese-born nobleman, made a fidalgo by King Manuel, who settled in Madeira in the early sixteenth century, held sesmaria lands and founded a Madeiran family. By deed of 30 April 1524 he donated the site of the São Tiago chapel in Funchal.
