Walnut (Juglans regia)

Original title: Nogueira (Juglans regia)

The walnut tree, widely cultivated in Madeira, with notes on its origin, nuts, oil, valuable timber, dye from its bark and medicinal use of its leaves.

A tree of the family Juglandaceae, widely cultivated in Madeira. It is native to south-eastern Europe and Asia, and bears fruits that are green at first and later black, with a furrowed stone (the nut). The kernel is the edible part of these fruits, and in some countries a drying oil is extracted from it, used in the arts and in household economy. Walnut wood is much sought after for certain luxury work, and the bark of the tree yields a dark brown dye. An infusion of the leaves and of the outer part of the fruit (epicarp and part of the mesocarp) is taken internally to purify the blood.
