Lyceum Museum

Original title: Museu do Liceu

A small natural-history teaching museum in the Funchal lyceum building, with shell and mineral collections, a seal, birds, fish and botanical specimens, largely acquired in 1913–1914 through the efforts of Major Alberto Artur Sarmento.

The lyceum (state secondary school) building houses a small museum for the instruction of the school’s pupils. Besides a shell collection and a mineral collection, it contains a seal and a number of birds, fish and botanical specimens. These natural-history objects were acquired in 1913 and 1914 thanks to the efforts of Major Alberto Artur Sarmento, a distinguished teacher of natural sciences. Before then the lyceum had held a few zoological specimens, whose state of preservation was already poor some 40 years ago. (1921).
