Oceanographic Museum

Original title: Museu Oceanográfico

A planned oceanographic museum in Funchal, for which the municipal council voted funds in December 1920, but which was abandoned because the budget was too small.

On 23 December 1920 the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) resolved to contribute 200 escudos (Portuguese currency from 1911, = 1,000 réis) towards setting up an oceanographic museum, and 50 escudos a month towards its running costs. Some building work was even begun in the premises of the Holy House of Mercy (Santa Casa da Misericórdia) to house the planned museum. It had to be abandoned, however, once it was recognised that with the meagre sum voted by the Municipal Council nothing of scientific interest could be achieved, especially where oceanography was concerned. (1921). (See that entry).
