Quince (Cydonia oblonga, subspecies maliformis)

The quince, a shrub of the rose family probably from south-west Asia, cultivated in Madeira mainly for making marmalade; its juice and seeds have medicinal uses.

A shrub of the family Rosaceae, subfamily Pomoideae, originating, it seems, in south-west Asia. It is cultivated in Madeira, where its fruit is much sought after for making quince marmalade. Quince juice is useful against diarrhoea, and an infusion of the seeds can be used against coughs.
