Joinville (Prince of)
Original title: Joinville (Príncipe de)
The Prince of Joinville (1818–1900), a French naval officer and son of King Louis-Philippe, visited Madeira several times. In 1840 he called at Funchal while leading the mission to bring Napoleon's remains back from Saint Helena.
He was born in 1818 and died in 1900. He was the son of Louis Philippe, King of France, and had married the Portuguese infanta Princess Francisca, sister of Pedro II of Brazil and of Queen Maria II of Portugal. He was a distinguished officer of the French navy and in that capacity visited Madeira several times in command of warships. In 1840 the French naval frigates La Belle Poule and La Favorite lay in our harbour, carrying the mission charged with exhuming the body of Napoleon I on St Helena and bringing it back to French soil; the Prince of Joinville was the head of this important and honourable mission. We shall refer to this event at greater length in the article Napoleon in Madeira.
