The Giraldes surname was brought to Madeira by the Florentine Dr Pedro Giraldes, who lived in Calheta and founded its Misericórdia in 1535.

This surname was brought by the Florentine Dr Pedro Giraldes, who lived in Calheta (‘small cove’) from around 1500 to 1535, and in that last year founded the Misericórdia there, of which he was the first president (provedor).
