Gamboa

Entry on the Gamboa surname in Madeira, traced to António Garcia Gamboa, a knight of the Order of Christ who held commanderies and the post of sergeant-major of Madeira under King Sebastião.

This surname ‘derives,’ says the annotator of the Saudades, ‘from António Garcia Gamboa, a native of the town (vila) of Almeida and a knight of the Order of Christ, who was commander of the small tithes (miunças) of the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) and of the fish tithe of the towns of Machico and Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’). He also held noble rank (foro de fidalgo) and the proprietary post of sergeant-major (sargento-mor, a field officer ranking as major) of the island of Madeira in the time of King Sebastian.’
