Gamboa e Liz (António de)
Biography of António de Gamboa e Liz, civil governor of Funchal district from 1836 and the first to hold the title of Administrador Geral, whose administration drew complaints from the Funchal council.
He was appointed civil governor of this district by decree of 7 December 1835 and took office on 14 May of the following year. During his term the post of head of the district came to be called administrator-general (administrador geral), and he was the first to hold this office here. In 1838 the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) sent a petition to the government on the mainland protesting against this governor’s poor administration. He was born in Arruda dos Vinhos on 10 January 1778 and died on 26 March 1870.
