The yellow-legged gull, resident in the archipelago, nesting on sea cliffs; young birds are locally called gaio or gaivoto.
A bird of the family Laridae, resident in the archipelago. Egg-laying takes place on the sea cliffs in April and May, the clutch consisting of three eggs of variable colour. The nest is built of dry, interwoven plants.
Madeirans call young gulls gaio or gaivoto; they are distinguished from the adults by their dark plumage, which is replaced by the definitive plumage only after three years.
