The kittiwake, an Arctic gull that winters in the Madeira archipelago and is common in Funchal bay in winter.
A bird of the family Laridae, originating in the Arctic regions, which comes to winter in the Madeira archipelago. In the bay of Funchal it is a common sight in winter, now rocking on the swell, now perched on the gunwales of the coal lighters.
