Figueira
Genealogical note on the Figueira surname in Madeira, traced to Pedro Figueira of Faial, who settled around 1500, and to the early settler Álvaro Figueira.
Pedro Figueira, a native of the island of Faial and son of João Figueira and Aldonça Fernandes, was one of the first on this island to bear this surname, having settled here around 1500. One of his sons, named Manuel Figueira, founded an entail on this island. Dr Álvaro de Azevedo gives these men the name Figueiró, but in various books of nobility we have found the surname Figueira applied to the individuals mentioned above; the same commentator on the Saudades adds that he does not know who first introduced this surname to the island. It is certain that Álvaro Figueira was also one of the first settlers of Madeira and held land by sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) in Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’).
