Ferraz (Francisco João de Freitas)
Funchal-born priest (1823–1859), honorary canon and curate of Funchal Cathedral, celebrated as one of the finest preachers of his time.
The annotator of ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra) mentions this priest as one of the most distinguished preachers of this diocese in the 19th century. He was born in Funchal in 1823 and died in Lisbon on 31 July 1859. Illness and an early death prevented him from revealing the full power of his talent and his remarkable gift for preaching. Even so, in his day he was regarded as a brilliant ornament of the pulpit, not only in Madeira but throughout the country. He held the honours of a canon and was curate of the Cathedral (Sé Catedral) of this city. He died in Lisbon, where he had gone in search of better health, a victim of pulmonary tuberculosis.
