Familiars of the Holy Office

Original title: Familiares do Santo Oficio

Lists individuals recorded in Funchal council books as familiars and notaries of the Holy Office (Inquisition) in Madeira.

The books of the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) record the following individuals as familiars of the Holy Office: Manuel Mendes Serrão (1697), Father Augusto de Góis (1739) and Father António Ribeiro de Sousa (1741). The last two were notaries of that tribunal.

In 1551 the king granted a son of João Rodrigues Cavaleiro, clerk of the Council (escrivão da Câmara), the office of notary of the Holy Office as a royal grant.
