Black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo)
Original title: Espada Preta (Aphanopus carbo)
The black scabbardfish, abundant in Madeira's deep waters and caught by Câmara de Lobos fishermen at about 1000 fathoms, a major supply for Funchal's market.
A fish of the family Trichiuridae, almost peculiar to the deep seas of Madeira, where it lives in great numbers. Caught exclusively by the fishermen of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), it is a tasty fish that supplies the Funchal market on a large scale. It is fished at a depth of about 1000 braças, which makes this one of the deepest fisheries in the whole world. The scabbardfish, once very cheap, now sells for as much as 60, 70 and 80 centavos each in the Funchal market.
