Duarte (Dom)

Original title: Duarte (D.)

D. Duarte was a bishop sent in 1516 by the first Bishop of Funchal, D. Diogo Pinheiro, to act in his place; he confirmed, ordained and consecrated Funchal Cathedral on 18 October.

Duarte (Dom)

In the year 1516,’ says Gaspar Frutuoso, ‘because he (the first Bishop of Funchal, Dom Diogo Pinheiro) was occupied in the King’s service as judge of the Desembargo do Paço (the royal supreme court; desembargador do paço) and detained by the affairs of the King and the Kingdom, he sent to the city of Funchal a bishop named Dom Duarte. Since he himself could not come, this bishop confirmed, conferred holy orders and gave regulations (regimento) in the Cathedral, and performed other ministries proper to his office and charge. He consecrated the Cathedral of the city of Funchal with great solemnity on St Luke’s day, 18 October, blessed one of the bells that were placed in its tower, and did other very necessary things.’ Dom Duarte came to Madeira two years after the creation of this diocese; earlier, in 1508, the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo) had sent Bishop Dom João Lobo to this island.
