Main article Lobo (Dom João) D. João Lobo, titular bishop of Taiere, was the first bishop to come to Madeira. He was sent in 1508 by the vicar of Tomar of the Order of Christ, before the diocese of Funchal existed, to carry out episcopal functions such as confirming, ordaining and consecrating churches.

He stayed about two years, blessed the unfinished church in Funchal and consecrated the Santo Espírito chapel at Lombada on 27 August 1508.
