A plant of the family Plantaginaceae, common on Madeira, Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) and the Desertas (‘deserted islands’). Its leaves are arranged in a rosette, elongated, hairy or almost glabrous, usually 1–2-pinnatipartite, and its spikes are narrow, with basal peduncles. An infusion of its leaves is used as a gargle for diseases of the throat. The name diabelha is better known on Porto Santo than on Madeira.
