Diabinho (João Nunes)
João Nunes Diabinho (1850–1927), Funchal semaphore employee, noted puzzle-setter and inventor of a 'despertador-translator'.
He was born in Funchal on 16 March 1850. For many years he worked at the Ilhéu Semaphore Station (Estação Semafórica do Ilhéu), a post from which he retired, and he is well known as a setter of charades, having contributed to the Almanach de Lembranças and other publications. He invented and built an apparatus that he called the ‘despertador-translator’, and he is a man of undeniable artistic gifts, as several other works he has made bear witness. He died on 11 January 1927.
