Delgado

The Delgado surname, descending from early settlers Pedro Delgado and Isabel Fernandes who held land at Ponta do Sol.

This family surname derives from Pedro Delgado, known as ‘o Nabo’, who, according to Dr Azevedo, married Isabel Fernandes, known as ‘a Velha da Serra’; both were of noble birth and came from the town (vila) of Arruda, in Portugal. They were among the first settlers of the island of Madeira and held a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) at Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’), apparently at Lombo das Adegas (‘ridge of the wine cellars’).
