Costa (João Sabino da)

João Sabino da Costa, a Funchal-born shop worker killed by Lisbon police in 1908 on false suspicion of involvement in the regicide.

He was born in Funchal on 14 October 1886 and was killed by the police of the capital on 1 February 1908, on suspicion of having been involved in the assassination of King Carlos I and the Crown Prince Louis Philippe, a crime in which it was later proved he had taken no part whatsoever.

He had been a soldier in the 5th Infantry Regiment (regimento de infantaria n.º 5), and at the time of his death was a shop worker.

The former ramp and paved lane of Cidrão now (1920) bear the name of João Sabino da Costa.
