Our Lady of the Portiuncula (convent)

Original title: Convento de Nossa Senhora da Porciuncula

Former Franciscan convent in the parish of Ribeira Brava, near the parish church, of which only ruins and a façade dated 1730 remained.

Map: Madeira (2)

This convent of Franciscan friars stood in the parish (freguesia) of Ribeira Brava (‘wild river’), a short distance from the parish church. It was built by the Franciscan friars in a year we cannot determine. As recently as ten years ago some ruins of the conventual buildings could still be seen, and the façade and part of the nave of the church, which was of no very modest size, were still standing. Above the portico could be read the date 1730; we do not know whether it represents the year the convent was founded or the year the church was built, which seems to us more probable.

Chronology
  • The date 1730 inscribed over the portico probably marks the building of the church of the Porciúncula convent at Ribeira Brava.
