Grasshoppers

Original title: Cigarros

Grasshoppers and locusts, locally called cigarros; one species devastated crops in Madeira and Porto Santo in 1844.

Grasshoppers or locusts are orthopteran insects known in Madeira by the name of cigarros. The common green grasshopper (Madeiran cigarro) is Phaneroptera-4-punctata; the grey cigarro, frequent in the fields, is Pachytilus danicus. It was Dectycus albifrons that caused great devastation to the crops of Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) in 1844. It appears from time to time on the first of these islands, carried by winds from the coast of Africa, but since that year it has never again caused significant damage to crops.
