Gypsies

Original title: Ciganos

Records the arrival of several Roma families in Funchal in May 1912 and their two-month stay.

On 9 and 22 May 1912 several Gypsy families landed in Funchal and settled in huts on the Campo da Barca (‘boat field’). The men were coppersmiths, and the women practised fortune-telling (ler a buena dicha); some of them had quite regular features. They stayed in Madeira for about two months, and their dress and way of life aroused considerable interest among the Madeirans.
