Castelo Branco (Pedro de)
Pedro de Castelo Branco, Baron of São Pedro (1837–1911), Funchal-born physician turned diplomat, minister plenipotentiary in Constantinople.
Pedro de Castelo Branco, Baron of São Pedro, was born in Funchal on 19 April 1837, the son of Rear-Admiral Joaquim Pedro de Castelo Branco. He was a doctor of medicine of the University of Paris and for some years was a senior official of the postal service. He then moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and entered the diplomatic service. He served as secretary of legation in various European capitals and as chargé d’affaires in Berlin and The Hague, and in 1891 he was appointed minister plenipotentiary in Constantinople. He later served as head of the private office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and died in Lisbon on 14 December 1911.
