Castelo Branco Manuel (Maurício José de)

Original title: Castelo Branco Manuel (Mauricio José de)

Magistrate from Valezim, juiz de fora in Madeira, elected deputy for Madeira to the Constituent Cortes of 1821–22 and founder of the Madeiran Castelo Branco family.

Castelo Branco Manuel (Maurício José de)

He was a native of Valezim and belonged to an old and noble family of that town (vila). He graduated in law and pursued a career in the magistracy, serving on this island as juiz de fora (crown-appointed judge from outside the district) in the first quarter of the 19th century. When representative government was proclaimed in the country, Dr Maurício Castelo Branco was elected deputy for Madeira to the Constituent Cortes (constituent parliament), which sat from 1821 to 1822. The other two representatives of this archipelago in the Cortes were Francisco João Moniz and Dr João José de Freitas Aragão.

The work Galeria dos deputados das cortes gerais e constituintes... de 1821 shows that Maurício José Castelo Branco championed Madeira’s affairs with dedication and dealt quite boldly with various matters of general interest, revealing himself a very liberal mind of great independence of character.

He married a Madeiran lady in Funchal and on this island was the founder of the distinguished Castelo Branco family.
