Câmara Leme (Dom Jorge da)
Original title: Câmara Leme (D. Jorge da)
Funchal-born liberal soldier (1807–1889) who went into exile, landed at Mindelo in 1832 and fought through the Liberal Wars.
He was born in Funchal on 13 March 1807, and on 2 December 1826 he enlisted as a volunteer in the 1st Grenadier Company of the 4th Infantry Regiment. He was, however, discharged from the service shortly after the restoration of absolute government in Portugal. Having emigrated to England because of his liberal ideas, he went from there to the island of Terceira, where he enlisted in the 5th Caçadores (Portuguese light infantry) Battalion, which landed on the beaches of Mindelo on 8 July 1832. He served throughout the whole campaign for liberty, up to the Convention of Évora-Monte, by which time he held the rank of second lieutenant. He died on 8 July 1889, then a retired army lieutenant.
