Biddle (Anthony J. Drexel)
American author of books on Madeira which the Elucidário condemns as full of errors and absurdities.
Works: The Madeira Island, London, 1900, 2 vols.; The island of the Wine, Philadelphia and San Francisco, 1901, 2 vols.
We have not read the first of these works, but the second is particularly curious for the series of errors and absurdities it contains. If Mr Biddle, who styles himself a member of three American scientific associations, had also belonged to one of the many temperance societies of his country, he might perhaps have produced a more honest and accurate work than the one he dared to publish about our island.
The first edition of the book The Madeira Island was published in the city of Philadelphia in 1896 and contains the same errors and absurdities as the second edition, which dates from 1900.
