Bicheiro
The bicheiro is a simple hooked pole used to pull seabirds from burrows or, in a sturdier form, to haul large fish aboard.
A rudimentary, rough implement for hunting and fishing, whose name derives from the word bicho (creature). It consists of a pole with a hook or gaff at the end and is used to pull seabirds, such as cagarras, anjinhos, etc., out of their burrows; in this case a slender quince-wood pole makes up the whole implement. In other cases, made of a sturdy shaft fitted with a strong hook, it works as a true boathook, and fishermen use it to haul aboard the large fish brought alongside the boat.
