Banda de Além
Populous locality of the parish of Machico, on the left bank near the mouth of the stream, one of the archipelago's main fishing centres. It contains the historic chapel of Senhor dos Milagres, the scene of Madeira's most popular pilgrimage.
A populous locality (sítio) of the parish (freguesia) of Machico, occupying a considerable part of the town (vila) of the same name and lying on the left bank of the stream, near its mouth. Most of the people of the place who make their living from fishing live here, and it is one of the most important fishing centres in the archipelago. In this locality stands the historic chapel of the Lord of Miracles (Senhor dos Milagres), whose foundation is bound up with the discovery and first colonisation of this island. It is the centre of the best-attended pilgrimage in Madeira, held on 9 October each year, when several thousand people flock there. From this locality a fine road runs, partly skirting the picturesque cove, and leads directly to the landing quay. It has 243 households (fogos, literally ‘hearths’) and 1,090 inhabitants.
