Azeda

Explains the vernacular plant name 'azeda', which refers to Rumex maderensis on Madeira and to Scorpiurus sulcata on Porto Santo, with their medicinal, culinary and fodder uses.

The azeda of Madeira is Rumex madèrensis, of the family Polygonaceae; that of Porto Santo is Scorpiurus sulcata, of the family Leguminosae. The first of these species is taken internally, as an infusion, to purify the blood, and can be used in salads, purée of greens, etc.; the second is good-quality fodder. Scorpiurus sulcata is frequent in Madeira, where it is known as cabreira.
