Royal Wine Association of Madeira
Original title: Associação Vinícola da Madeira (Real)
A short-lived Madeiran wine association founded in 1900, with notes on failed attempts to create a wine company in 1909 and as early as 1774.
This association, founded in 1900, did not last long. At its meeting of 11 October of that year, the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) granted it an annual subsidy of 100,000 réis.
On 12 July 1909 a meeting was held to discuss organising a wine company or association in Madeira. Despite the goodwill shown by some proprietors, however, the company was never established, and so the island continued to suffer the grievous effects of the disastrous fall in the price of its wines.
As early as 6 May 1774 the creation of a wine company in Madeira was being considered, for on that date an official letter was read at a meeting of the Council referring to the advantages our island would gain from the formation of a firm or society to champion the interests of Madeiran viticulture.
