A list of the trade and professional associations based in Funchal, giving their foundation dates and the dates their statutes were approved, mostly between 1835 and 1918.
Commercial and trade associations of Funchal
We know of the following, all based in Funchal: Associação Comercial (Commercial Association). It was founded in 1835 by the merchant João Shortridge, had its first statutes approved on 12 March 1836, and is at present governed by new statutes approved on 11 May 1888.

It was founded on 1 July 1912, and its statutes were approved by decree of 24 August of the same year. Associação dos Carpinteiros e Artes Correlativas. It was founded on 4 June 1899 and is governed by statutes approved by decree of 26 October 1900. Associação dos ‘Chauffeurs’ da Madeira. Its statutes were approved by decree of 20 September 1913, and it was established on 26 October of the same year. Associação dos Pedreiros do Funchal. It opened its register to members on 2 December 1912. Associação dos Serralheiros e Artes Correlativas do Funchal. It was founded on 5 April 1913. Associação dos Tanoeiros do Funchal. It was formed on 19 July 1913, and its statutes were approved on 17 February 1917. Associação dos Trabalhadores Braçais. Its statutes were approved on 24 February 1917. Associação dos Empregados do Comércio Madeirense. Its statutes were approved by decree of 10 October 1916. Associação dos Trabalhadores Agrícolas. It is governed by statutes approved by decree of 25 May 1918. Associação dos Proprietários da Madeira. It voted its statutes on 9 March 1918. Associação dos Industriais de Destilação da Madeira. It was founded in 1918. Liga das Artes Gráficas do Funchal. It was founded on 24 October 1915. Other associations were created after this period, but we have been unable to obtain any information about them.

Seat of all the associations listed.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
