Rice
Original title: Arroz
Account of a successful trial of rice cultivation at São Vicente in 1918, apparently the only attempt in Madeira, and a request to the Junta Agrícola for protection of the crop.
We are not aware that any attempt to grow rice was ever made on this island at an earlier time. We do know, however, that in 1918 a grower of that cereal, a native of mainland Portugal, who was then living in the parish (freguesia) of São Vicente (‘St Vincent’), carried out a trial of the crop there. It was crowned with the greatest success, yielding an excellent and abundant harvest. For this reason a petition signed by several landowners of that parish was addressed to the Madeira Agricultural Board (Junta Agrícola da Madeira), asking for special protection for the cultivation of this cereal. It seems to us, however, that no further trials were made to develop this industry.

São Vicente is described as the largest and most populous parish of northern Madeira and the seat of the only town on the north coast. The Elucidário covers its settlement, church history, localities and landscape, and the deadly landslide of 1929.
