Original title: Aliança Madeirense
History of the Aliança Madeirense insurance company, founded in Funchal in 1891 with purely Madeiran capital, with its founders, capital increases and governing bodies.
Foundation, capital and management
The Madeiran Alliance insurance company (Companhia de Seguros Aliança Madeirense) was founded by a deed of 2 April 1891 with a capital of 200,000,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis), divided into 2,000 shares of 100,000 réis each. Its principal promoters on this island were João Joaquim Mendes, now deceased, and Júlio César de Nóbrega Pereira.
It was formed exclusively with Madeiran capital belonging to merchants, landowners, industrialists, etc. Its first Board of Directors consisted of João Joaquim Mendes, João Bernardino Gomes and Júlio César de Nóbrega Pereira, and its first Supervisory Board of Luís Gomes da Conceição, now deceased, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues and the Viscount of Vale Paraíso. Its first bookkeeper was the late João Onofre da Gama.
By a deed of 15 May 1893 the share capital was raised from 200,000,000 réis to 300,000,000 réis, divided into 3,000 shares of 100,000 réis each, in accordance with the resolution of the General Meeting of 7 April of the same year.
The Company at present has a reserve fund of 831,801.40 escudos, and enjoys the highest reputation both in Madeira, where it has its head office, and in mainland Portugal. There it has been warmly praised by some of the most eminent figures in the insurance business, notably by the late actuary and director of the important insurance company ‘A Nacional’, Fernando de Brederode, a former Minister of Labour regarded as one of the greatest authorities in the field. The current chairman of the General Meeting is Manuel Maria Ribeiro; the Board of Directors consists of Dr Juvenal Henriques de Araújo and Tristão Pedro Bettencourt da Câmara, and the Supervisory Board of Francisco Dias Tavares, Vicente Ângelo Gomes da Silva and Augusto Sérvulo Ferreira. Its present bookkeeper is Abel Caires Soares.
In 1935, in accordance with the resolutions passed at the general meetings of 20 February 1931 and 18 March 1932, the Company carried out a large-scale operation to pay up its shares in full.
