Aderno (Ardisia excelsa)

The aderno (Ardisia excelsa, now Heberdenia excelsa) is a native Madeiran tree of the myrsine family found in the mountains of São Vicente, Ribeira da Janela and Porto da Cruz. Its hard, pale wood was formerly used for the keels of boats.

A native tree of the family Myrsinaceae, found in the mountains of São Vicente, Ribeira da Janela, Porto da Cruz, etc. It has leathery, entire, translucent leaves dotted with red at the margins, and small green or greenish flowers gathered in clusters that are almost always extra-axillary. Its fruits are small, globular and red, and its wood is white or slightly pinkish, wavy-grained and hard. This wood was formerly used for the keels of boats.
