Tristão Teixeira, called 'das Damas' for his courtly verses to ladies, was the eldest son of the discoverer Tristão Vaz and second captain-donatary of Machico. Believed to be the poet in Resende's Cancioneiro Geral, he was summoned to Lisbon over complaints and cleared himself of a grave accusation. He is buried in the chapel of São João that he founded in Machico church.
