Person merchant philanthropist landowner

merchant · philanthropist · landowner · bibliophile
English wine merchant in Madeira from at least 1804 and partner of José Phelps, remembered for extensive philanthropy: bridges, fountains, mountain shelters such as those at Paul da Serra and Ribeira das Cales, road repairs and gifts to charities. He was decorated twice by King João VI and received Leopoldina at his Quinta do Belo Monte in 1817, though the Elucidário notes he lent himself to the dubious 'discovery' of relics of Machim's cross.
