Madeiran mathematician from Ribeira Brava (1795–1885), professor at Coimbra, liberal exile, deputy for Madeira, minister of the navy, peer of the realm and twice governor-general of Portuguese India. He was the uncle of Daniel Ferreira Pestana and the maternal uncle of the zoologist Barbosa du Bocage.
