Grandson of Tristão Vaz, first donatary of Machico, and a Madeiran nobleman known as the 'Rei Pequeno' (Little King) for his generosity and pride. Legend holds that he heard Mass on horseback at the Faial church, and his family's manor house was carried away by the 1803 flood.
