Born in Madeira, he was the eldest son of Rui Gonçalves da Câmara and succeeded him as fourth captain-donatary of São Miguel in the Azores. A João Rodrigues da Câmara is also recorded as rebuilding the Anunciação chapel at Lombo dos Canhas with his wife in 1696.
