First Count of Carvalhal and the richest nobleman of Madeira, who created the Quinta do Palheiro and entertained Archduchess Leopoldina there in 1817. He defeated foreign exporters' attempts to depress wine prices by buying musts at fair prices, led Madeiran Freemasonry on its revival in 1826, and founded the Montepio for poor widows. He also gave the land for the Angústias cemetery.
