British major-general commanding the troops occupying Madeira from July 1812 until their departure on 3 October 1814. He had an English soldier executed in 1813, ignoring the governor's protest and offending Portuguese sovereignty. A Gordon also sat on the English committees that ran the Santo António da Serra pilgrims' house until 1832.
