During its 1857–1859 circumnavigation, the Austrian frigate Novara under Commodore Wuellerstorf-Urbair, with geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter aboard, stayed at Madeira and Funchal from 8 to 17 June 1857.
Ferdinand von Hochstetter's pamphlet Madeira was published in Vienna.
