Diogo Berenguer was a member of the 1847 Madeira governing junta and a former Cabralist turned Regenerator, in whose house the Popular party committees met. He owned the land on which Funchal's 1817 fish market was built and exchanged it with the Câmara for the site of a municipal shop.
