  1. António Veloso de Lira was born in Calheta.

  2. The revolution of 1 December 1640 in Lisbon ended Castilian rule and gave the throne to the Duke of Bragança as D. João IV; Madeira and Porto Santo joined it with enthusiasm, and António Veloso de Lira led Portuguese students home from Salamanca.
