Lira (Father Manuel de)

Original title: Lira (Padre Manuel de)

Madeiran priest from an old Calheta family who, while a captive in Algiers, cared charitably for fellow captives; he died in the first half of the 17th century.

This Madeiran priest was for some time a captive in Algiers, where he rendered great services to the other captives held there, tending and helping them with the most evangelical charity. He belonged to an old family of Calheta (‘small cove’), where he was born and where he died in the first half of the 17th century. He was a relative of Canon António Veloso de Lira (see that entry).
