António Maria de Fontes Pereira de Melo was a notable Portuguese statesman and leader of the Regenerator party, who headed the government from late 1871 and died in 1887. As a lieutenant of engineers he visited Madeira in September 1858 and inspected the works on the Rabaçal levada.
